As we all know, diet plays an important role in the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 3. You need to make changes to your diet when you have kidney disease. Well, what is a good diet for a person with stage 3 CKD?
Please note the following requirements for patients with stage 3 CKD:
1. Fluid
In stage 3 CKD, fluid is not restricted until you experience fluid retention. Sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, swelling in the feet, hands, face and high blood pressure are signs of fluid retention. These symptoms indicate a decline in kidney function and decreased urine output.
2. Sodium
CKD stage 3 patients need to limit salt and high sodium foods to reduce hypertension, assist blood pressure medications to work more effectively and treat fluid retention. The sodium intake for stage 3 CKD is 1000 to 4000mg/day based on blood pressure, fluid balance and the presence of other diseases that may affect sodium requirements.
3. Restrict potassium
Kidney disease patients also need to limit potassium foods including milk, yogurt, avocado, kiwi, oranges, papayas, banana, legumes, tomatoes, spinach, sweet potatoes and animal protein.
4. Restriction of phosphorus
Phosphorus may be limited because reduced kidney function causes phosphorus to build up in your blood. A diet with no more than 800mg phosphorus can help. Foods with high phosphorus should be avoided like cheese, milk, nuts, seeds and yogurt.
5. Protein
Protein intake in stage 3 is 0.8g/kg body weight. On a lower protein diet, at least half of your protein comes from high quality protein foods that contain all the essential amino acids such as egg white, fish, meat, soy, poultry and small of amounts of dairy.
It is very important to know what your diet and nutrition goals are if you have stage 3 kidney disease. However, only diet is not enough. In addition, you also need to repair your kidney intrinsic cells and improve renal function. Only in this way can your quality of life be improved.
