Generally speaking, kidney disease patients should have less meat products and more vegetables and fruits. A vegetarian diet is low-protein, low-fat, high-vitamin and high-fiber which are good for stage 3 kidney disease patients because it can help lower high creatinine levels, provide necessary vitamins, reduce burdens to the kidneys and help protect kidney functions.
However some veggies and fruits are loaded with potassium or phosphorus which should be limited especially if patients have high blood potassium or high blood phosphorus levels because when kidneys are damaged, it has difficulty in controlling the normal amount of water and electrolytes in the blood.
There are some fruits and veggies that should be avoided or limited to stage 3 kidney disease patients.
High-potassium veggies and fruits
Vegetables and fruits that contain rich potassium should be limited or avoided if patients have developed hyperkalemia (higher than normal serum potassium level). High-potassium fruits and vegetables include orange, banana, kiwi, figs, grapefruits, dates, apricots, strawberry, nectarine, avocado, cantaloupe, mango, pomegranate, prune, raisins, potatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, lima beans, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, green bean, asparagus, avocados, peas, celery, artichokes, winter squash, etc.
High-phosphorus veggies and fruits
Too much phosphorus intake can cause or worsen hyperparathyroidism, itching skin, bone problem, therefore it is better that kidney disease patients should not eat high-phosphorus foods including roasted soybeans, flax seed, bacon, nuts, sesame seeds, sesame butter, cheese, toasted wheat germ, pumpkin, squash and watermelon seeds, etc.
High-fructose
Fruits usually contains rich fructose which has been proved to be a worsening factor for kidney disease. Therefore the amount of fruits that CKD patients eat should not be too much. If CKD patients at the same time have high blood sugar, there should be strict restriction on the fruits that they eat each day and each time.
In a word, stage 3 CKD patients will begin to have some special diets to help slow down illness progression. They need to limit the intake of proteins and meat products. Having more fresh fruits and vegetables are good for their kidneys and health. But if patients begins to show the signs of high serum potassium or high serum phosphorus, it is better that some certain fruits and veggies should be avoided or at least limited.
