Prognosis and Prevention of Hyperuricemia Nephropathy

2012-09-28 16:49

Hyperuricemia nephropathy is more common among the obese and drinkers as well as those that like to eat meat. Hyperuricemia nephropathy mainly occurs to the male accounting for more than 90% and it is very rare among the female. With early diagnosis and proper treatments, the renal damages can be alleviated or stopped. If it is misdiagnosed or the treatments are not proper, the illness condition can be worsened and finally develops into kidney failure.

Hyperuricemia nephropathy is the serious consequence of long term hyperuricemia and it is often accompanied by gouty arthritis which usually has lasted for years before renal damages. Hyperuricemia nephropathy is a chronically progressive kidney disease and renal damage has nothing to do with the severity of arthritis. There are about 50% hyperuricemia patients will die of renal failure, so we can see the renal involvement is quite serious and effective preventions should be taken once there is hyperuricemia.

As for the increase of uric acid, some scholars think that it is caused by the dysfunction of uric acid excretion while some others think that the renal damages in hyperuricemia is related to old age, hypertension, diabetes and metabolic disorder of fat. The exact cause of renal damages remains unclear at present.

Effective preventions of hyperuricemia nephropathy is to increase awareness of hyperuricemia, limitation of high-purine and high-protein foods, alkalizing urine and promoting the excretion of uric acid.

In case of normal kidney functions or if the kidney function is mildly damaged medicines that can help discharge uric acid such as benzene bromide ketone can be used. Benzene bromide ketone can inhibit the re-absorption of the uric acid by the renal proximal convoluted tubules and promote its excretion. In case of renal insufficiency, medicines that can help inhibit the formation of uric acid such as allopurinol and if the disease has developed into renal failure, dialysis is needed.

In addition, it has been reported by some scholars that the ginkgo biloba extract can help reduce the leakage of protein in chronic hyperuricemia patients, reduce blood viscosity and blood lipid. It is effective for preventing early renal kidneys and can be used to protect the kidneys.
