What Are the Changes in Digestive System Caused by Uremia

2013-01-05 02:38

To make it simple, uremia is the end stage of chronic renal failure and therefore it is a serious illness condition. In this stage, due to the failed kidney filtration functions, there are excessive accumulation of metabolic wastes and toxins in the body which will damage and poison not only kidneys but also many other organs and systems and patients will have a series of symptoms and complications.

The earliest symptoms in digestive system are loss of appetite or indigestion and in serious conditions there can be anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomforts, glossitis, oral ulcer, urinary taste in breath. In the end stage there will be black dung and haematemesis due to gastrointestinal bleeding.

Why uremia patients will have these digestive symptoms?

Urea enzyme of the intestinal bacteria can decompose urea into ammonia which will stimulate the gastrointestinal mucosa and cause inflammations and superficial ulcers. In addition, nausea and vomiting are related with dysfunctions of the central nervous system. Gastrointestinal hemorrhage is also very common and uremia patients have higher incidence than normal person and this is in most cases caused by gastric mucosal erosion or peptic ulcer.

In end stage uremia, besides digestive system, nearly all the systems will be involved and patients may even have life-threatening conditions such as heart failure, mental anomaly, coma, etc.

Uremia patients need to have dialysis (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) to replace the functions of the failed kidney to discharge metabolic wastes and maintain balances of water, electrolyte and acid-base.

Kidney transplant can be said to be the most effective treatment for uremia. However not uremia patient has the chance to have it due to the scarcity of matching kidney donors, not to mention the huge cost and taking of anti-rejection medicines in the rest of their life.

Considering of this, uremia patients can have some herbal medicines at the same time of dialysis which can enhance the curative effects and in the long run will do a lot of benefits to the patients. Some herbs can help alleviate the symptoms and complications of uremia and regulate patients’ internal environment and make patients stronger and healthier.
