Diet Therapy for Malnutrition and Anemia In UremiaMalnutrition and anemia in uremia can be treated by dietary therapy. Malnutrition and anemia indicates patients are easy to get infection and cardiovascular diseases and the risk of death is increased.

As we all know, uremia patients should avoid many foods in their diet. Thus, it causes malnutrition and anemia. When you suffer from these, you can correct them from diet aspect apart from medicines.

1. Intake enough protein

Per kilogram of body weight should be given 0.6g protein each day. Patients with twice dialysis a week should be given 1-1.5g protein per kg of body weight. Patients with third dialysis a week should consume 1.2-1.5g protein per kg of body weight. Besides, 50-70% protein should be animal protein such as eggs, fish and lean meat. Plant proteni should be 30-50% like soy beans.

2. Consume enough calories

If you can not consume enough calories, your body will use your protein from food and muscles to provide calories for you so as to cause malnutrition. Most people use 30-35Kcal/kg calories to keep your current body weight. It is mainly supported by sugar and fat. Also high quality protein food can give you some calories.

3. Low phosphorus diet

Avoid eating high phosphorus foods to prevent hyperphosphatemia. Phosphorus intake per day should be 0.6g.

4. Consume vitamins

Every day you should consume vitamins like vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin B12 and folic acids, etc.

As for patients without dialysis, they should follow a proper low protein diet to delay the progression of kidney function. As for uremia patients with dialysis, they should not limit protein intake too strictly so as to prevent malnutrition and anemia.
