Hyperuricemia And C Peptide Levels In Type 2 Diabetes

2013-02-06 16:20

Type 2 diabetes is also called adult diabetes because it mainly occurs to patients that are between 35-40 years old. It accounts for more than 90% of all diabetes cases.

Type 2 diabetes is characterized by high blood glucose along with metabolic disorders of protein, sugar and fat. Patients can have thirst, high blood pressure, fatigue, headache, dizziness, skin itching, numbness, etc.

Besides high level of blood sugar and blood pressure, type 2 diabetes patients can also have high level of blood uric acid which is called hyperuricemia in clinic.

Hyperuricemia and type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes can cause hyperuricemia and this is mainly due to decreased renal function to excrete uric acid. Insulin can promote re-absorption of uric acid in the kidneys so as to reduce its excretion resulting in high level blood uric acid.

Recent studies have found that hyperuricemia is not only the result of high blood sugar, but also can be one cause of diabetes. Serum uric acid is related to the production of oxidative stress and tumor necrosis factors which have much to do with diabetes, therefore hyperuricemia can be an early sign of type 2 diabetes.

Hyperuricemia can not only cause gout and renal damages, it is also a risk factor for hypertension, stroke and cardiovascular disease. When serum uric acid is lowered, the incidence for individual diabetes patients can be lowered by 24%.

C peptide level and type 2 diabetes

C peptide level can reflect functions of islet cells and it is of great significance for diagnosis and treatment for type 2 diabetes. C peptide is mainly discharged through the degradation and filtration of the kidneys and under normal circumstances, the concentration of C peptide in urine is higher than that in blood.

The short-term aim for treating type 2 diabetes is to bring high blood sugar level well under control and the long-term aim is to prevent and treat complications.
