Statistics have shown that there are about 20% ADPKD (autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease) will have the complication of kidney stones, then what are the symptoms and signs in case of kidney stones?

ADPKD is one kind of PKD and it account for about 90% of all PKD cases and it is often called adult polycystic kidney disease since patients usually have symptoms in their adulthood (in most cases between 30s to 40s) though the multiple cysts have already existed in their kidneys since birth.

In case of kidney stones, patients will have a series of signs and symptoms:

1. Pains. When the kidney stone is small, it will move in the ureter and cause sharp pains.

2. Urinary tract obstruction. If the stone is large, it will easily obstruct the urinary tract and this will make the patients susceptible to infections.

3. Bleeding. When the stone moves or when it causes urinary tract infections, it will increase the risk of cyst rupture and cause hematuria (blood in urine).

Treatments for kidney stone and ADPKD:

A traditional treatment for kidney stone and ADPKD is surgery. However surgery only aims at removing the necrotic parts without solving the root problem and there is no improvement of the kidney functions, therefore the cysts are easy to relapse and stones will once again form in the kidneys.

Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy is a good choice for ADPKD patients who have been complicated with kidney stones especially if the stone is small in size. Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy has effects on both cysts and stones. It has the functions of dilating blood vessels, anti-coagulation, and anti-inflammation. It can increase the blood flow and promote blood circulation which will bring the cystic fluids and stones with them and discharge them out of the body.

Diets suggestions:

Besides proper and early treatments, patients should pay more attention to their daily diet which plays a very important role in determining the formation of kidney stones. The general diet principles for ADPKD patients are low-salt, low-fat, moderate high-quality protein (lean meat, egg white and milk), and high vitamin. They should try to avoid dog meat, spicy foods and sea products. For those that have kidney stones, they should avoid or at least limit the intake of acid foods.
