2013-12-06 15:36

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic and progressive kidney disorder. As renal function declines, the patients will experience a host of problems.Sleep problems commonly occur in PKD due to the following causes.

Restless leg syndrome

Restless leg syndrome is a disorder in which their legs feel itchy or tingly,or may jerk,or move on their own.It can wake up the patients and affect their sleep significantly. This condition can occur periodically or regularly and make the PKD patients feel itchy or painful. It can make the patients feel tired during the daytime.Restless leg syndrome can be due to several factors including anemia, Diabetes, and certain medications.

Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is one of causes of sleep problems in PKD.It is a condition in which your breathing is interrupted or stopped during sleep. One of the symptoms of apnea is snoring.Because their sleep is interrupted, the patients will often feel tired and drowsy during the day.For ways to deal with this disorder, you can consult with our doctor  for some medical suggestions.

Inadequate dialysis clearance

For PKD patients on dialysis, inadequate dialysis clearance can contribute to sleep problems.Based on the patients’ kidney damage degree and levels of waste products in bloodstream, dialysis treatment is prescribed periodically.A build up of waste in the blood can cause the patients to feel ill and uncomfortable. This could make sleeping difficult.

Long-term kidney disease can afflict PKD patients a lot emotionally.Worry, anxiety and sadness can keep the patients up at night and contribute to sleep problems.

The above are the common causes of sleep problems in PKD. How to control them effectively?Email to kidneycares@hotmail.com  for some medical suggestions.

No matter what the causes of kidney problems in PKD are, the underlying cause is enlarged cysts and reduced renal function. If these two causes can be controlled, the sleep problems will be treated fundamentally.
