Many young female PKD patients want to know can they give birth to healthy babies and weather polycystic kidney disease will affect pregnancy. This is because during the pregnancy, the burdens of the kidneys will increase and the creatinine clearance rate will be lowered. Especially at the end of the pregnancy the gravida is more likely to have hypertension and proteinuria. With the increase of blood pressure, there will be renal damages. Hypertension, hematuria, proteinuria are all signs of poor prognosis. What is more, PKD is a hereditary disease and the baby might inherit the pathogenic gene.
It has been explained by kidney experts that PKD patients can have baby though there are many restricted conditions or the pregnancy will bring harms to both the baby and gravida.
First we need to know under what circumstances that pregnancy is safe:
1. The illness condition is stable and there is no urinary tract infection.
2. The serum creatinine is in the normal range.
3. The blood pressure is in normal range in several measurements.
4. The pathological change is mild if renal biopsy is done.
There are some conditions that are not suitable for pregnancy:
1. The PKD patients that have hypertension are not suitable for pregnancy. There are about 75% will have severe pregnancy-induced hypertension syndrome and the incidence of premature birth and stillborn is very high.
2. In case of renal functions being affected especially those that have proteinuria, high level of serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen.
From the above analysis we can see that, not all the PKD patients can not give birth to babies and it should depend on the gravida’s specific illness and physical conditions.
Another issue that needs to be mentioned is the heredity of PKD. The prenatal gene diagnosis can help the gravida give birth to a healthy baby such as the cyst gene detection of the amniotic fluid or hair cells at the 10th week of pregnancy.
