no smokingPolycystic kidney disease is a hereditary renal disorder and patients have to carry the abnormal gene for life-long time. Therefore proper home nursing cares are very important for slowing down illness progression.

Many PKD patients especially male patients concern weather they should give up smoking or not and want to know the harms smoking will bring to them.

Nephrologists and experts have clearly pointed out that PKD patients should not smoke. This is because tobacco contains a lot of nicotine. It is a kind of toxins and can cause a lot of harms and damages to the body and that is why healthy people should not smoke, not to say PKD patients.

Nicotine can cause vasoconstriction, promote arteriosclerosis and reduce blood supply and blood flow in the kidneys. On one hand, this makes high blood pressure even harder to control and worsen PKD. We know that high blood pressure is one common symptom and the major aggravating factor of PKD, therefore we should seek every means to bring the blood pressure well under control so as to slow down glomerular sclerosis and delay the progression into end stage renal disease.

One severe complication of PKD is aneurysm which is one of the major cause of early death for PKD patients. Well controlling of high blood pressure is crucial for reducing the risk of aneurysm and aneurysm rupture so as to improve survival rate.

On the other hand, smoking can damage the upper respiratory tract and lung and make PKD patients more susceptible to colds, infections and pneumonia. Infections in the lung and trachea will in turn worsen PKD.

From the above analysis, PKD patients should be clear about the harms that smoking can bring to them, therefore it is better to try the best to give up smoking if you are diagnosed with PKD. Passive smoking is harmful too, therefore PKD patients should stay far away from tobacco.

Besides smoking, PKD patients should avoid alcohol, coffee, chocolate, strong tea, spicy and stimulating foods.
