Should I Have a Baby if I Have Polycystic Kidney Disease

2012-11-21 14:38

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) consists of 2 categories---ADPKD and ARPKD. It is congenital and hereditary and most patients get the disease because they have inherited the abnormal gene from their parents.

With the development of medicines and popularization of medical knowledge, people know more about it and more attention and importance are being attached to it.

More and more people are found with PKD due to the development in imaging tests (B ultrasound, CT and MRI) and popularization of physical examination. Many young PKD patients want to know should they have babies if they have PKD. Here are some questions and according answers that they may concern.

1. Can PKD patients have babies?

It is misunderstood that PKD patients can not give birth to babies. Actually they can only if it is a little bit difficult and more cares should be paid to them. It depends on the gravida’s kidney functions and weather she has severe complications. If her kidney function is normal and there is no high blood pressure, she can have baby. But closing daily care and regular checks should be done to maintain her and her baby’s health.

2. What is the probability of inheriting PKD?

There are two types of PKD. In case of ARPKD, the baby can inherit the disease only with two abnormal genes from both parents; in case of ADPKD, the baby has the disease with only one gene from one parent. The genetic risk of PKD depends on its type and parents’ conditions.

3. Is there any way that can help me have a healthy baby?

Yes, there is---prenatal diagnosis at the 10th-12th week of pregnancy. Genetic diagnosis can help confirm weather the baby has PKD or not. Though it sounds unfair to the baby, it is for their goods.

4. What is the best time for PKD patients to have baby?

According to the illness progression, PKD can be divided into 5 stages. The earlier the patient has baby, the better because PKD will chronically progress into renal failure. Usually patients will develop symptoms during 30s to 50s and therefore having baby before having symptoms and complications is better. Of cause this may not apply to every case and it is recommended to have thorough consultation and examination before deciding to have baby.
