2013-03-06 11:59

PKD stands for polycystic kidney disease in which both kidneys are filled with multiple renal cysts. They will continue to enlarge and increase and renal functions will be affected when normal renal tissues are damaged. With continuous progression of PKD, patients will have elevated serum creatinine levels. A kidney-friendly diets can help lower high creatinine levels, reduce symptoms and slow down illness progression.

Let’s see what PKD patients with high creatinine should and should not eat.

* High-protein foods should be avoided. When proteins are broken down, a waste product called urea will be produced. Urea needs to be discharged through the kidneys and this will definitely add much burdens to the kidneys.

Daily protein intake for PKD patients with high creatinine should be controlled within 0.8g per kilogram body weight. Meat products, cheese and other high-protein foods such as chickpeas, lentils should be avoided or cut back.

A well managed low-protein diet can help reduce high creatinine level, slow down illness progression and delay dialysis. If you are suffering from malnutrition due to inadequate protein intake, you can have some supplement of ketosteril.

* Limit salt intake. Kidneys can balance water and electrolytes in the body, too much salt intake will place strain to the kidney. While cooking dishes, use less salt, ketchup and soy sauce and replace them with garlic powder, onion powder and some herbal spices such as cinnamon.

Avoid processed foods and scanned foods. It is better to have home-cooked meals instead of eating fast foods or restaurant foods.

* Drink more water. Dehydration can further increase high creatinine. And during dehydration, a hormone called vasopressin will become active and it has been studied to help stimulate the growth of renal cysts. What is more, more fluid intake can help increase urine output and flush more wastes in urine.

* Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Coffee, chocolate, strong tea, cola contains rich caffeine which can cause dehydration, disturb immune system and worsen renal cysts. Alcohol can activate polycystic protein and promote cyst growth.

* Have more of the following foods. High-vitamin foods, black fungus, diuretic foods, alkaline foods, radish, cranberry juice, flaxseed oil, etc. Black fungus can help dissolve stones in kidneys, flax seed oil can help ease the symptoms of PKD, alkaline foods have auxiliary therapeutic effects for polycystic kidney disease and high creatinine levels.
