BBC News: Much to be Improved on Kidney Care

In a recent report from National Health Service (NHS), the researchers are calling on for a need to raise awareness for early prevention and timely detection to help tackle chronic kidney disease. The study has been published in the journal Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation.

In the study started by NHS, chronic kidney disease causes up to 45,000 premature deaths each year, more than lung and breast cancer combined. It comes as a warning that improved kidney care, lifestyle changes and awareness could help many to lead better lives and save NHS money.

The disease, known as Chronic Kidney Disease, is where the kidneys become less effective at filtering wastes out of bloodstream. Kidney disease is a latent one that may don’t cause obvious symptoms at primary course. CKD is slow progressive kidney disorder that may cause gradual loss of renal functions over periods of time.

The report says that 1.8 million people in England have been diagnosed, but suggests there are one million undetected cases. Half of NHS spending goes on dialysis and transplantation, yet this accouted for only 2% of all patient diagnosed with CKD.

Ms Kerr, one of the researchers, said failure to detect to the disease mean many people did not get the lifestyle advice and treatment is needed. CurrentlyMost of the spending on CKD is for people with advanced disease. If people can find their kidney disease at earlier stage, they can particularly benefit from lifestyle changes and drug treatments, and decrease progressive kidney damage, risks of heart disease, strokes and other fatal conditions.

The report comes as a call for focusing attention on the need for early detection and intervention, to reduce the human and financial cost of advanced kidney disease, not only for the individuals but also for a society or governmental health care provide.
