New Treatment Option for Obese Kidney Patients

2012-09-09 17:47

It has been published in Science Daily on Aug. 31, 2012 that new treatment has been successfully applied to obese kidney patient at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System.

Aidee Diaz is a 35-year-old Chicago woman and she was diagnosed with kidney disease and hypertension 5 year ago. Since then she has received intensive treatments including chemotherapy and steroids to reduce the protein leakage in urine and control high blood pressure. Her weight reached 300 pounds from 180 pounds and she had no choice but to take dialysis because the doctor told her to lose weight before kidney transplant. However losing weight is really hard and unrealistic for her. On July 9, Dr. Subhashini Ayloo performed the combination of robot-assisted sleeve gastrectomy and robot-assisted kidney transplantation. 70 percent of Diaz's stomach was removed. This not only helps Diaz lose weight but also regain kidney functions, What is more, she suffered fewer injuries since two surgeries are combined and operated at the same time.

Surgeons have been conducting trials to show weather simultaneous sleeve gastrectomy and kidney transplantation is more effective and has less complications than kidney transplantation alone, however the result has not come out yet.
