How to Treat Edema in Nephrotic Syndrome

1. Limit fluid intake

To tightly control proteinuria, Nephrotic Syndrome patients usually need to ingest adequate protein and 60% of the protein should be high quality protein which can be found in fish, lean meat, egg white and milk. Also, eating less salt is necessary. A well-arranged diet is helpful for control proteinuria, but if patients want to receive radical effects, they need to repair damaged glomerular filtration membrane which is the root cause of proteinuria in Nephrotic Syndrome.

3. Some medicines also can be used to treat edema in Nephrotic Syndrome

In serious cases of Nephrotic Syndrome, some medicines also can be used to treat edema. Medicines commonly used in clinic include oral spironolactone, aldactone, spironolacton hydrochlorothiaz and aldactazide. These medicines are helpful for Nephrotic Syndrome patients to remit their edema, but if not used properly, they will cause lots of unnecessary side effects. Therefore, Nephrotic Syndrome patients need to use these medicines under the direction of their doctors.
