Proteinuria Classification In Nephrotic Syndrome

2013-04-14 16:10

Proteinuria is one typical sign of nephrotic syndrome and other symptoms all have something to do with proteinuria including swelling, hypoalbuminemia, hyperlipidemia, etc.

Proper treatment for proteinuria is very important for nephrotic syndrome patients. To have effective treatment, we need to make clear the underlying cause of proteinuria. There are several types of proteinuria in nephrotic syndrome according to the damaged part of the kidneys.

Proteinuria can be divided into glomerular proteinuria and tubular proteinuria. Renal glomeruli have the functions to prevent proteins from passing through the filtration membrane and renal tubules have the function to re-absorb micromolecule proteins back into the blood.

Glomerular proteinuria means that the cause of abnormal proteins in urine is caused by glomerular damages. When the charge barrier and mechanical barrier are damaged, excess proteins will pass through the glomerular basement membrane. When the amount is beyond the tubular re-absorption ability, there will be more than normal proteins in urine. Massive proteinuria is in most cases is glomerular proteinuria.

Tubular proteinuria means that the re-absorption ability of renal tubules is impaired. In such case, proteins in urine are mostly micromolecular proteins and 24-h urine protein is usually less than 1-2g.

In most cases, proteinuria in nephrotic syndrome is the mixture of both glomerular proteinuria and tubular proteinuria. With continuous illness progression, both renal tubules and renal glomeruli will be damaged especially in the end stage nephrotic syndrome.

It is of great significance to make clear the classification of proteinuria before offering treatment. Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy has been proved to be effective at reducing proteinuria, slowing down illness progression and protecting residual kidney functions for nephrotic syndrome patients.

According to the location and severity of renal damages in nephrotic syndrome, different medicines will be selected and different treatment plan will be made. When the damaged renal tissues are repaired, proteinuria will be treated from the root and the relapse rate will be much lowered.
