Can Children Nephrotic Syndrome Patients Have Baking Soda

Researches have found that baking soda can help slow down the illness progression of nephrotic syndrome and delay the need for dialysis, therefore it might be recommended by the doctor and dietitian as an auxiliary therapy for both children and adults with nephrotic syndrome.

Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate which can help rectify acidosis and relieve symptoms associated with metabolic acidosis. Nephrotic syndrome can cause gradual decline of kidney functions and patients can develop a series of symptoms and acidosis is one common one. It is due to acid-base imbalance in the body since the damaged kidneys can not remove excessive acids from the blood. Baking soda can help increase bicarbonate level so as to restore normal blood PH and relieve acidosis-associated symptoms such as bone problem, high uric acid, high creatinine, nausea, vomiting, headache, etc.

For children nephrotic syndrome, baking soda is a very good choice because it is not so bitter as the prescribed drugs and medicines. And it causes no side effects or harms to the children’s normal physical and mental development.
