As one common kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome is of high recurrent rate which brings a lot of bothers and worries to the patients. So what are the factors resulting in high recurrent rate and how should we lower its incidence of recurring. This article is about the 4 reasons why nephrotic syndrome is easy to relapse.

Nephrotic syndrome is characterized by massive proteinuria, hyperlipidemia, hypoalbuminemia and edema with the former two the most typical ones. Nephrotic syndrome has 2 types---primary and secondary which can be caused by immune diseases (such as systemic lupus erythematosus), diabetes and infections (such as bacteria, hepatitis b virus), circulatory system diseases or drug poisoning, etc.

Why nephrotic syndrome is easy to relapse?

1. Heredity. Recent studies have found that the recurring of nephrotic syndrome has something to do with the leucocyte antigen. Those children that have certain leucocyte antigen are more likely to have the relapse and this is determined by heredity and can not be changed.

2. Infections. In some cases, the recurring of nephrotic syndrome has much to do with infections especially upper respiratory tract inflammation. Catching cold can cause proteinurina to be positive and some may also have edema and when the cold is recovered the protein in urine will disappear with it. Therefore more importance should be attached to cold and infections which should not be neglected.

3. Long term intake of large amount of prednisone. Long time intake of prednisone will cause adrenal cortical atrophy and the adrenal will cease to secrete hormones if the medicine is stopped and cause shortage of epinephrine. Under such condition, nephrotic syndrome is easy to relapse. Therefore patients should be more cautious whiling taking prednisone and other renal toxicity medicines and drugs.

4. Non-standard taking of medicines. It is common that some patients will stop taking hormones or reduce its dosage without the doctor’s permission. This is very easy to cause relapsing or even fail the effects of steroid therapy. There are strict principles while taking hormones, therefore patients should be under the doctor’s permission and guidance and have medicines at the right time and with the right dosage.
