Nephrotic Syndrome can be primary or secondary, so the cause of it varies from one to one. The following is the introduction about cause of Nephrotic Syndrome and hope it is helpful.

Nephrotic Syndrome refers to a group of abnormal medical conditions which include massive protein in urine, swelling, low albumin in blood and hyperlipemia. Massive protein in urine (usually more than 3.5g) is the necessary standard to diagnose Nephrotic Syndrome and also it is the major cause for patients to experience swelling, low albumin in blood and hyperlipemia.

In normal cases, most of the protein are kept in our body by glomerular filtration membrane, so no protein is detected out in our urine. However, once glomerular filtration membrane is damaged, protein leak out and into urine. This is the general process how proteinuria is caused in Nephrotic Syndrome.

When large amounts of protein leak out with urine, protein in blood reduces and obviously, low albumin in blood is caused easily. Besides, as protein in blood reduces, solute concentration in blood decreases as well and to keep balance between inside blood vessels and outside blood vessels, fluid in blood flow into surround tissues. This is how swelling is caused by proteinuria. Also, occurrence of hyperlipemia is closely related with great loose of protein. In a world, Nephrotic Syndrome occurs because of seriously damaged glomerular filtration membrane.

According to clinical studies, in more than 95% cases, glomerular filtration membrane is damaged directly by inflammatory reaction which occurs when immune complexes deposit in mesangial area. Large amounts of immune complexes are formed when we have an abnormal immune sytem or low immunity which can cause infection easily, so for primary Nephrotic Syndrome, it is usually triggered by abnormal immune complexes and low immunity. Besides, in clinical, great loss of protein in urine also can be caused by other conditions, so there are some other causes for Nephrotic Syndrome like Purpura Nephritis, Systematic Lupus Erythematosus and Hepatitis B-related nephritis.
