Fatigue - Renal Failure

2012-09-28 14:44

Fatigue is one of the common renal failure symptoms and it becomes increasing a problem as the kidney failure advances. According to recent survey, more than 99% of patients with end stage renal failure are reported to have symptom of fatigue.

In cases of kidney failure, fatigue, also can be called tiredness, mostly is contributable to anemia which appears because kidneys fail to generate much EPO (Erythropoietini). EPO is the essential material and generally produced by kidneys. However, kidneys that are failing do not produce enough EPO, as a consequence of which, production of red blood cells decreases to very little. The primary function of red blood cell is to carry oxygen from the lungs to the tissues around our body. Thereby, with anemia, kidney failure patients feel tired easily.

On the basis of above information, we know the best way to remit fatigue for kidney failure patients is to increase the red blood cell count. Therefore, doctors often prescribe medications like Aranesp to aid in the production of red blood cells. These medicines are effective in remitting fatigue, however, as it is unable in repairing kidney damages, kidney failure patients have to take medicines for a long time and even the rest of their life. Thereby, from the long run, it is not advisable.

For kidney failure patients, anemia appears because of decreased kidney function. So recovering kidney function is the only method to remove fatigue fundamentally.
