2012-10-07 17:48

In some cases, the people find their body weight changes obviously between sessions of dialysis. Why this happens? Is there anything wrong in the patients? As is pointed out by kidney disease experts, for people on maintenance dialysis, controlling stable body weight is essential so as to improve prognosis and prolong life expectancy.

“Before dialysis, my weight is 78, but after dialysis it is 75, but after two days when I do dialysis again it becomes 80. What is the problem in me?”

As we have known, the main job of the kidneys is to discharge excessive toxins and fluid out of the bloodstream. In end-stage kidney failure, the kidneys are so severely impaired that they can not perform their normal functions. Dialysis does the job of the kidneys and will remove water out of bloodstream.

You told me your weight increased before your second dialysis. According to your description, I think you have edema. During every dialysis, some excessive water will be removed, but two days after dialysis, the excessive water will increase in body again. Your weight will be lowered down after dialysis. Keeping stable dry body weight is important for people on dialysis. Dry body weight refers to an ideal body weight after dialysis wherein the people have normal blood pressure and no presence of abdominal hydrocephalus and heart distension. During dialysis, the speed in discharging fluid should also be well managed. Sudden and sharp reduction of body fluid will affect stability in cardiovascular system and increase risks of heart diseases. Measure your body weight each time after dialysis so as to make sure dry body weight is managed well. Talk with your doctors to determine the suitable intake volume of fluid. Keep in contact with your doctor to make sure whether your condition is controlled well.
