How to Deal with Constipation in Kidney Disease

Constipation is a common issue among patients with kidney disease. While it is a very embarrassing to talk about it,it actually may cause many health problems for the patients. The following article will give some guidance on how to relieve constipation.

Causes of constipation in kidney disease

Restricted diet

A restricted diet is required among patients with kidney disease. Vegetables are good source of fiber. However,as they are loaded in potassium,vegetables intake is often limited.A low fiber diet can contribute to constipation in kidney disease. In addition, fluid restriction is also required in renal patients.


Some medications for kidney disease,abuse of laxatives and phosphate binders may cause constipation in kidney disease. If so, the medications should be replaced with other drugs.

Lack of exercise

The renal patients may become tired and some patients may worry that exercise can affect their health. So many patients with kidney disease may have no adequate exercise. Lack of exercise is an attributable factor of constipation in kidney disease.

How to manage constipation in kidney disease?

A high-fiber diet

A high-fiber diet can help a lot in manging constipation in kidney disease. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and it can takes in water,making stool bulkier to help bowel movements pass more easily. However, the foods high in fiber are generally high in phosphorus and/or potassium. So the patients should be cautious when selecting high-fiber foods.

Take proper exercise

The patients with kidney disease should increase the daily activity leve like walking,stretching. Proper exercise can improve the patients’ overall condition and reduce the incidence of constipation.
