2013-09-09 10:10

Is gout related to kidney failure? A patient said a biopsy told that his kidney problem was contributed to gout. The following article will explain how is gout related to kidney failure.

Gout can be a cause of kidney failure

Gout occurs when high levels of uric acid builds up in blood and formes crystals in the joints and/or kidneys.Uric acid is the byproduct of purine and normally is filtered out of body by kidneys in the form of urine. However,if metabolic disorder occurs, uric acid will not be removed from body properly. Then uric acid levels in the blood will become too high, a condition known as hyperuricemia. If hyperuricemia continues for a long, crystals will form and cause gout.

Firstly,if the uric acid deposits in kidneys,it will cause inflammation in kidneys, thus resulting in progressive renal function decline. Progressive renal function decline eventually can lead to Kidney Failure.

Secondly, the crystals can form an obstruction that prevent your kidneys from removing wastes and causing kidney infection. Kidney infection may worsen renal function.

Gout can be a complication of kidney failure. As mentioned above, uric acid processes through the kidney, and leaves the body in urine. In kidney failure, the kidneys are damaged significantly and can not filter blood properly. As a result, excess uric acid will accumulate in body.If high level of uric acid keeps high over time, crystals will form. If the crystals deposit in joints, it will cause gout. Gout can make the patients feel very painful. In return, gout can be an accelerator in worsening renal function.
