Renal Failure Life Expectancy After Kidney Transplant

2013-06-07 10:50

For renal failure patients, dialysis and kidney transplant can help prolong their life expectancy. Kidney transplant can help patients regain kidney functions, get rid of dialysis and lead a normal life. However kidney transplant is not a cure for renal failure and the transplanted kidney has the risk of second failure.

The shortest life expectancy after kidney transplant

Organ rejection is the major concern of kidney transplant. Acute rejection can cause the patient to lose the new kidney within days or even hours. Patients can have the following symptoms such as fever, reduced urine output, high blood pressure, high serum creatinine, kidney pain, etc. In case of severe organ rejection, the transplanted kidney needs to be removed as soon as possible and the patient will be put on dialysis again.

To lower the risk of organ rejection, kidney transplant patients need to take immunosuppressants for the rest of their life. These drugs will further weaken their immune system and make them more susceptible to various infections. What is more, these drugs can cause many side effects in the long run. All these factors can affect the patient’s life quality and life expectancy.

The longest life expectancy after kidney transplant

It has been reported that the longest life expectancy of kidney transplant is 35 years. So we can see that there are a lot of things that can be done to improve the prognosis of kidney transplant. Many factors can affect the life expectancy of kidney transplant, let’s what we can do to improve the survival rate and life expectancy for kidney transplant patients.

1. Bring underlying cause of the first kidney failure well under control. Some kidney disease patients have higher recurrent rate than others after kidney transplant such as FSGS, therefore it is very necessary to address the primary disease so as to protect the transplanted kidney.

2. Lower high blood pressure. High blood pressure after kidney transplant often affect the life expectancy.

3. Lowering high blood lipid. Long term intake of steroids and immunosuppressants can increase blood cholesterol which is a risk factor of arteriosclerosis. About 40% kidney transplant patients die of cardiovascular disease and occlusive vascular disease, therefore it is very important to lower high blood lipid.

After kidney transplant, patients still need to have regular checkup so as to have early detection of any problem and seek timely and proper measures.
