Can Patients with Kidney Failure Consume Dairy ProductsHealthy kidneys can filter out excess fluid and wastes from body which are mainly from what we eat and drink. However,in kidney failure, the kidneys are not functioning properly. The patients should pay more attention to their diet. Can patients with kidney failure consume dairy products?

Dairy products should be limited for people with kidney failure due to the minerals of phosphorus, potassium, and calcium in them.

Bones are mostly made of calcium and phosphorus. When kidneys function well, they are able to keep these minerals in balance in the blood and bones. However, when the kidneys are not functioning well, extra phosphorus will build up in blood. If the levels of phosphorus in blood are too high, the calcium in bones will be pulled out, thus resulting in bone problem. In addition, extra phosphorus in body also can contribute to skin itching.

Therefore, the patients with Kidney Failure should limit the consumption of dairy products.Usually, people with kidney disease are urged by their dietitian to limit consumption of dairy products, usually half to a cup of milk, half a cup of yogurt or one ounce of cheese per day.

Potassium is an important mineral in body.It is important to maintain the muscle function. However,if high levels of potassium build up in body,it can cause muscle weakness, tingling, heart failure, and even death.

For the above reasons, the patients with kidney failure should choose alternatives to milk in their diet.Calcium, phosphorus, potassium and protein content should all considered when choosing a milk alternative. The milk alternatives for kidney failure include rice milk, nondairy creamer, soy milk and almond milk.

Besides limiting the foods high in phosphorus and potassium, the patients with kidney failure are also recommended to limit foods high in proteins and sodium in their daily diet. However,as the illness condition varies from individual to individual, a personalized dietary regime should be made.
