Q:
I am stage 5 CKD. I was recently found I have 3 cysts on my left kidney and 2 cysts on my right kidney. The cysts are small and the largest is 2.1. I have been on dialysis for 3 years. Will these cysts affect my kidney functions and what should I do? Will these cysts continue to grow?
A:
From what you have described above, these multiple cysts in your kidneys are cussed by long term dialysis. It is one common type of kidney cysts and it is called acquired kidney cysts which are very common among end stage kidney disease patients especially those that have been taking long-term dialysis. Usually acquired kidney cysts will not affect kidney structure and kidney functions especially when they are smaller than 3cm. However you still need to pay more attention in daily life to avoid foods such as tobacco, alcohol, coffee, spicy and excitant foods, etc, avoid strenuous activities and physical traumas which might cause the cysts to get rupture and cause severe consequences.
