Q:

My father is 53 years old and there is a renal cyst on his left kidney. Its size is about 2.2*1.7cm. My father loves drinking; however I learned that it is not good to drink alcohol for kidney cyst patients. Will alcohol affect the cysts and should my father have strict restriction on drinking?

A:

It is recommended that your father to give up drinking because alcohol especially white wines will speed up the secretion of cystic fluids and growth rate of the cysts. At present the cyst in your father’s case is not so large and it can be brought under control and will not affect his normal life with proper nursing cares. One important point is to get rid of drinking or the cyst will experience rapid growth and cause many symptoms and health problems such as back pain, urinary tract infection, fever, protein in urine and blood in urine, etc.

What is more, alcohol will do damages to the kidneys. It can disturb the nitrogen balance and increase the metabolism of protein, thus increasing the blood urea nitrogen level and adding more burdens to the kidneys.

Alcohol can also cause creatine hypermetabolism and increase the level of serum creatinine. The decomposition of alcohol will produce many acid materials which can result in metabolic acidosis, nausea, loss of appetite, depression, headache, etc.

To control the illness progression and prevent further kidney damages and health problems, it is better that your father give up drinking alcohol.
