Kidney cysts are chronically progressive renal disorders affecting one or both kidneys. It can cause pains and sufferings to patients especially pains in the back, flank or abdomen.

There can be only one or multiple cysts and the cysts can be found in the surface of the kidney or in deep renal cortex or renal medulla. Its sizes vary from millimeters to centimeters and in some severe cases the cysts can be as large as more than 10cm. In such conditions, patients will sense palpable abdominal mass and persistent pain.

The most common cause if kidney cyst pain is oppression of surrounding renal tissues or the falling of enlarged kidneys due to the cyst enlargement. However the pain can also be caused by infection, kidney stone or cyst bleeding. Different treatments will be offered according to the exact location and cause of the pain.

1. The pain is caused by cyst bleeding or infections. Kidney cyst patients are very easy to catch infections in the kidneys, urinary tract and bladder. In case of cyst bleeding or cyst infection, the pain will worsen suddenly. Timely intake of antibiotics can treat the underlying infection and relieve the pain. Patients can also have some rose hips which function as natural antibiotics in the body.

2. The pain is caused by urinary tract obstruction due to kidney stone or blood clots. Kidney stone is a common complication of kidney cysts. Both stones and blood stasis after cyst bleeding are easy to obstruct the urinary tract and cause renal colic. Treatments for this condition is to promote blood circulation in the kidneys so as to remove blood stasis and promote the discharge of kidney stone and blood clots. Cranberry, goldenrod and rose hips are helpful for preventing and treating kidney stones. Some herbs like marshmallow, corn silk, yarrow and fleabane can be used to soothe the urinary tract after the stone passes through.

3. The pain is due to cyst expansion and kidney enlargement. The continuously enlarged cysts will stretch renal capsule and renal pedicle and oppress surrounding renal tissues and organs. What is more, the downward falling of enlarged kidney can also cause back pain. The pain is dull and fixed in one or two sides and radiates downward or toward waist and back. In such condition, the treatments should focus on how to shrink or remove the cysts. If patients do not experience serious symptoms, herbal medicines can be taken to shrink the cysts, but it takes relatively long time to take effects. If the cysts cause unbearable pain and discomforts, surgeries can be operated to remove the cysts. To lower the recurrent rate, herbal medicines can be combined to regulate renal disorders and recover certain renal functions.
