Can Parapelvic Cysts Cause Urinary Tract Infections

When pathogens enter into the urinary tract and grow in the urine, the urinary tract mucosa and tissues will be damaged and this is called urinary tract infections (UTI). Any part of the urinary tract can be damaged and it is mainly divided into lower urinary tract infection and upper urinary tract infection according to the location of the infections.

Lower urinary tract infections refer to bladder infection or urethra infection and upper urinary tract infections refer to kidney infection (mainly pyelonephritis) or ureter infection.

It is true that patients with parapelvic cysts often have frequent urinary tract infection and in case of infections, they will also feel chill, high fever and knocking pain in the renal areas. But the parapelvic cysts are not the direct cause of UTI even though it can increase the risk and frequency of urinary tract infection.

Lower urinary tract infections will cause lower back pain, frequent urination, urinary urgency, mucus secretion, burning feeling while urination and blood test shows purulent cells and red blood cells. Upper urinary tract infections will cause flank pain, fever, nausea, vomiting and in some cases there might be pus or blood in urine.

The main treatment is antibiotics and in case of pyelonephritis, the treatment should be more aggressive that that for bladder infection. Long term oral intake or intravenous antibiotics can be adopted for serious urinary tract infections. If the symptoms do not reduce after several days, urinary tract infections due to too large parapelvic cysts or kidney stones should be considered and proper treatments should be taken if necessary.

Besides antibiotics, patients should have adequate rest and drink more warm water to help consolidate the curative effects. After receiving clinical remission, patients should take some mild exercises to improve physical fitness and enhance immunity.

Besides, to prevent further urinary tract infections, it is necessary to pee immediately after intercourse and never hold urine.

And if the parapelvic cysts are large enough to obstruct the urinary tract and cause hydronephrosis and other symptoms, see a nephrologist as soon as possible.
