Is It Serious to Have Ruptured Cyst on Kidney

2013-02-13 12:54

There are many types of renal cyst on the kidneys and there are different classifications according to different criteria. There can be renal cortical cyst and parapelvic cyst, unilateral cyst and bilateral cyst, simple cyst and complex cyst, hereditary PKD and acquired cyst after dialysis.

Ruptured renal cysts are usually larger than 3cm and the main causes of cyst rupture are abdominal traumas, cyst infections, pressure, ischemia and hypoxia due to oppression of renal tissues and surrounding organs.

If not treated timely and properly, cyst rupture will easily cause infections and inflammations in the kidneys and in serious conditions can even cause bleeding, sepsis and renal failure.

In case of cyst rupture, patients will feel shiver, high fever, back pain, urinary urgency, urinary frequency and pains while urination.

If the ruptured cyst is located at the outer part of the kidney, cyst puncture under the guidance of B ultrasound and CT scan can be done to drain the remaining cyst fluid out and then saline will be injected to wash the cyst cavity.

Usually body temperature can drop after the puncture. This needs to be done once again 2-3 days later until the drained fluid is clear and temperature returns to normal.

The drained cyst fluid will be cultured to make clear weather there is any infections in the cyst so as to provide guidance for choosing proper antibiotics and other medicines.

Though cyst rupture is rare in clinic, cysts larger than 3cm have risk of rupture and the risk increases along with continuous enlargement of the cysts, therefore if ultrasound and other renal imaging test shows that the cyst is larger than 3cm or if patients experience obvious symptoms and discomforts, timely and proper treatments should be sought.

In daily life, patients should pay more attention to the following aspects to lower the risk of cyst rupture especially when the cysts have been large enough to produce palpable abdominal masses.

Avoid strenuous activities and physical traumas in the abdomen

Avoid bending and lifting heavy goods

Wearing suspender pant to replace belts
