Will Kidney Cyst be Cancerous

2012-10-02 16:41

Kidney cyst is a common type of kidney disorder. When diagnosed as kidney cyst, the patients are not clear about the difference between kidney cyst and kidney tumor, and are quite worried whether the kidney cyst will become cancerous in later course.

Kidney tumor is indeed a board concept which includes benign and malignant tumors. Kidney cyst is a type of benign tumors, and other types of benign tumors also include renal adenoma tumor, structure tumor, renal hemangioma and proximal cellular tumor. Commonly seen types of malignant tumors mainly include renal cell carcinoma, renal pelvic cancer, Wilm’s tumor, etc. Kidney cyst is easily mixed with tumors. Clinical identification between kidney tumors and malignant tumors is done by two common tests---renal substantive tomography and renal arteriography.

In renal substantive tomography, kidney cyst will present a lighter imaging color, while the imaging in kidney tumor location is much darker. In renal arteriography test, blood vessels around the kidney cysts are sparse and there is no concentration of contrast agent. If it is a malignant tumor, the dense blood vessels will cause concentration of contrast agent.

Clinically, if a tumor is suspected for becoming cancerous, cyst puncture maybe performed. Evaluation for the cystic liquid and examination of the cast-off cells will be performed in laboratories. B ultrasound and CT scanning also helps to distinguish the two from each other.

Kidney cyst is a kidney disorder wherein a fluid-filled sac develops on the kidneys. The kidney cyst can get larger over periods of time. A cyst over 3cm in diameter can damage functioning kidney cells and decrease renal functions. Kidney cyst can pose symptoms including high blood pressure, abdominal pains, blood in urine and flank pains. Regular check-ups are essential with kidney cyst. Lab tests will be suggested by doctors if a kidney tumor is suspected.
