A:

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a chronic disease and it will in the end develop into end stage renal failure without effective and timely treatments. In the early stage of PKD there is usually no obvious symptoms and that is why it is very easy to be neglected and the optimal treatment period is often missed and it is often too late to reverse kidney damages. Therefore it is very necessary to know the early symptoms of PKD so as to seek early treatment.

1. Abdominal masses. When the cysts enlarge to a certain size, they can be palpable and patients can sense obvious masses in the belly. In case of infections, there is pressing pain.

2. Back discomforts. Most patients can feel tension in the back and sometimes the pain can be sharpened. This is caused by the stretching of renal capsule or oppress to surrounding tissues.

3. Anemia. Most PKD patients will have anemia and it will become worse and worse along with time and is often accompanied by night urination. This is caused by the reduced secretion of erythropoietin and decline of renal functions.

4. Hypertension. Hypertension usually occurs before the impairment of kidney functions and is often accompanied by headache, dizziness and this is closely related to hyperfunction of the renin angiotensin system.

5. Abnormalities in urination. Proteinuria and hematuria are the main early symptoms and proteinuria is more common and it is related to the glomerular barrier function.

6. Symptoms in the urinary system such as anuria, urinary frequency, urgency and pain, blood in urine, frequent night urination, oliguria, etc.
