Q:

I am female and I have diabetes. Fasting blood glucose is 106 and hba1c is 6.1. I have the following symptoms: frequent urination, fatigue, difficulty in walking, nerve pains, dizziness, protein in urine, swelling and sometimes chest pain. Can you help me analyze my illness conditions and give me some treatment suggestions, thanks!

A:

First we need to know the normal levels for fasting blood glucose and hba1c so that we can know how your current illness conditions are and offer more specific treatment suggestions.

Normal value for fasting blood glucose is 7-100mg/dl. Usually fasting blood glucose higher than 126 is considered diabetes. For those that are higher than 100 but lower than 126, it usually means prediabetes or impaired glucose tolerance. Your level is slight higher than the normal range, that means your blood sugar is under well control now, so do not worry!

As for hba1c, it is considered diabetes when it is higher than 6.5% and it is not diabetic when it is lower than 6. For your case---6.1, it is generally considered pre-diabetes or at risk of diabetes.

From the above analysis, we can see that your current blood sugar is well under controlled, but you still need to further lower their level. Your symptoms and discomforts are might due to your unstable blood sugar level, so the key point is to stabilize your blood glucose level.

For the treatment suggestions, i need to know what type of diabetes do you have. But from your current illness conditions, it is more likely to be type 2 diabetes.

Besides conventional insulin treatment, nutritional therapy is also very important. Some commonly eaten foods can help control blood sugar such as balsam pear, onion, konjac, pumpkin, laver, black fungus, bean sprouts, mulberry leaf tea, etc.

Some gentle and mild exercises are also good for diabetes patients such as walking, tai chi, callisthenics, qi gong, etc.
