Q:

I am a patient of Nephrotic Syndrome for 12 years and had 3 relapses of it this year. Doctor told me if relapses again, I will go to cellcept. Could you please tell me something about this medication? How does it work and will it bring me side effects?

A:

Cellcept is a common medication for people with Nephrotic Syndrome and it works by lowering our immune system which can help us against invader. Cellcept is usually taken by people who received organ transplantation such as liver and kidney. Our immune system treats the new organ as an invader, so to prevent organ rejection, cellcept is usually adopted to lower our immune system.

Nephrotic Syndrome patients are prescribed with this medication as there is inflammation in the body. According to clinical study, about 95% kidney diseases are related with immune system disorders and poor immunity. A strong immune system protect us from surrounding harmful substance, and once immune system goes wrong or immunity is impaired, these harmful substances which are clinically called antigen invade our body and form immune complexes with antibodies. Immune complexes circulate with blood and they may deposit in any part of our body. When they deposit in kidney, our immune system begins to attack them by setting inflammation. Inflammation helps us remove immune complexes, but meanwhile, it also damage our kidney. To avoid further kidney damages, patients will be prescribed cellcept to block inflammation.

Cellcept is effective in treating Nephrotic Syndrome and it shows quick treatment effects. However, as it can not remove immune complexes, Nephrotic Syndrome relapse also can occur.

Similar with other steroid medications, long-term taking of cellcept also can cause side effects. Common side effects caused by cellcept include fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, pale skin, easy bruising, unusual weakness, trouble breathing, fast heart rate, bloody, black stools, chest pan, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, headache, mild weakness, welling, numbness or tingly feeling and sleep problem and so on.

For anyone with Nephrotic Syndrome, before taking this medication, it is better for you to tell your doctor if you have other medications, and this will help you reduce lots of unnecessary sufferings.
