Q:

Is there any restrictions on the diets for polycystic kidney disease patients. Both my mother and I have PKD. Why is this? Does this have something with our diets or is this a hereditary disease?

A:

A:

Polycystic kidney disease is a congenital and hereditary disease and its onset is due to genetic mutation and most patients inherit the disease from their parents. Since you and your mother both have PKD, you must inherit the disease from your mother.

PKD is a common hereditary renal disorder which is characterized by multiple cysts in the kidneys and the cysts will continue to grow oppressing and replacing normal renal tissues and in the end alter renal structure and renal functions.

The mutated gene is autosomal and it can be divided into dominant PKD and recessive PKD according to different hereditary modes. The former requires only one abnormal gene from one parent and the latter requires a pair of abnormal genes from both parents, therefore it is much rarer in clinic.

Though the onset of PKD has little to do with diets, you and your mother need to have some diet adjustment to avoid aggravation of these cyst grow due to improper diets, reduce unnecessary burdens and damages to the kidneys, slow down the illness progression and play positive role for consolidating curative effects and reducing some symptoms and complications.

Since in the early stage of PKD, patients will begin to experience high blood pressure, therefore a low-salt diet is very necessary and beneficial for you. In the later stage of PKD, high-quality low-protein diets will be recommended. In addition, avoid strong tea, coffee, cola, alcohol and tobacco and drink more water, have adequate good rest.
