Q:

I have lupus nephritis and now I am taking steroids. Recently I begin to lose my hair significantly. I want to know is hair loss caused by the disease or the medicines that I take. Will it be permanent? Can my hair come back again once the medicines are stopped?

A:

The hair loss might be the result of both the disease and the medicines you take. Lupus nephritis does cause many patients to lose hair and some may even experience loss of eyebrow, eyelash, facial hair and body hair. Hair loss is an early sign of lupus and it has reported that nearly 45% people suffer from some types of hair loss. This is because lupus can cause extensive inflammations and involve the whole body. When the heat toxins accumulate on the face and scalp, the hair follicles will be damaged and the hair will become thin, fragile and break off easily.

Long term intake of hormones such as corticosteroid is another cause of hair loss. Besides it will cause many other side effects.

In most cases, the lost hair can come back when lupus is treated or after the medicines are stopped. However, if the disease is not treated timely or properly, the hair loss may become permanent when the hair follicles are completely scarred and lose their functions.

Of cause, hair loss can also be caused by other factors, so consult the doctor and find out the exact causes so as to receive timely and proper treatments.
