Creatinine 5.2, can the Patient Delay Dialysis for Five Years

2012-12-05 13:59

Q:

My mother has Chronic Kidney Disease and her creatinine level now is 5.2. She is now 45 years old. The doctor examined her and said that her current general condition is good and she can delay dialysis for five years. Is it true?

A:

As what you have mentioned, you have Chronic Kidney Disease, what is her current kidney function? It will be good if your mother’s current condition is stable. However, I am still rather afraid of her. If no correct treatment I don’t think your mother can delay dialysis for five years. I would like to explain in detail as follows.

The normal range of creatinine in adult females is 0.6 to 1.2mg/dl, now her creatinine is 5.2, which suggests the kidneys have been at least halved. Creatinine is a micromolecular substance of muscle activities. It is freely filtered by the kidneys so that the serum range can stay stable on daily basis. Creatinine doesn’t increase in early stage of kidney disease; but if creatinine begins to increase, it suggests that kidney function has decreased by over fifty percent.

The kidneys filter metabolic products the body produces. Of those, creatinine is one of the micromolecular substances. When creatinine increases, it suggests that there are many toxins as creatinine that builds up in the body. Creatinine itself is not harmful. But the heavy molecular substances can damage multiple organs including brain, heart and other body systems. Serum creatinine test is combined with other laboratory results to evaluate the patients’ overall illness condition.

Elevated creatinine results from severely impaired kidneys. The patient is now in relative stable condition, that’s good. But please note that the kidney damage is very serious now, and her kidney condition will continue to get worse. Kidney disease is an irreversible condition and it will be hard to improve the atrophied renal cells. In addition to elevated creatinine, renal anemia, electrolyte disorders and edema can combine to bring severe complications. So never focus just on the high creatinine itself, and consider treatment as early as possible.
