Q:

I have problems of kidney stones.  Have done surgery but now passing stones again. Can you please suggest some diet or natural method for controlling renal stones?

A:

There are many forms of kidney stones. According to different kinds of kidney stones, there are some tips for the patients to refer to.

﹡Calcium Oxalate Stone: The patients should have less food that contain calcium or oxalate. These foods include milk and dairy products, bean products, animal pluck such as liver, heart, kidneys, and intestines etc, chocolate, tea, sesame paste, egg yolk, mushroom, spinach, dried small shrimps, cocoa, celery, potato etc. In recent years, the study shows that fiber in the foods that can reduce the form of the calcium stones, such as the gluten free bread, rice bran which are good for recurring high-calcium stones. The deficiency of vitamin B1, B6 will cause the increasing of the oxalate, so the patients can have some food that contain these vitamins, like grains, dry fruit and xylocarp etc.

﹡Calcium Phosphate stone or magnesium ammonium phosphate stone: Low-calcium diet and for the low-phosphorous diet, they should have less meat, fish and bone broth.

﹡Urine stones: The patients should limit the intake of the protein. The amount of the protein intake daily should be controlled at 48-80g per kilos of the weight. Generally the vegetables with leaves contain about 10 g protein. 50g lean meat contains about 10g protein. The patients can properly increase the intake of vegetables and fruits, which are rich in vitamin B1 and C. The metabolin of these foods are alkaline, so the uric acid can dissolve easily in it.

Many diseases are closely associated to the daily diet and life style, so people should keep a good habit to prevent the happening of these diseases. For the kidney stone patients, they can keep the following in mind.

First, drink enough water. The patients can have much water so the urine can be diluted, and the concentration of the calcium ion and oxalate will decrease and can’t form calcium oxalate stone. If there increases 50% urine volume, the incidence of the kidney stones will decrease to 86%.

Second, have a proper calcium supplement. The calcium can combine with the oxalate of the vegetables forming insoluble calcium oxalate which can be discharged out of the body through the urine, and proper calcium in the blood will appear alkaline so it will restrain the form of the kidney stones.

Third, limit the intake of sugar.

Fourth, have less tomato, spinach, strawberry etc. which contains much oxalate.

Fifth, the patients can have more black fungus. Black fungus contains various mineral substance and trace elements, which can act with the stones and make them dissolve and discharged out of the body.
