Q:

I have Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). I have just started bike riding nothing strenuous. Will this harm my kidneys?

A:

Will Riding Bike Harm Polycystic KidneysBike does not harm your kidneys. Generally, PKD patients can do any activity they want unless they get blood in the urine or it causes back, flank or abdominal pain. The exercises that are least jarring to the kidneys include walking, swimming and biking.

Besides, most sports do not affect your kidney function. However, given the unique nature of PKD, where kidneys are enlarged and cysts can rupture, there are some simple precautions to take. Contact sports where the kidneys may be traumatized should either be avoided or protective pads should be worn. These types of sports include football, rugby, basketball, hockey and boxing or kickboxing. Horseback riding and cross-country biking could potentially cause issues with your kidneys. There is no evidence that these activity will worsen renal function, but they can cause pain, and/or blood in urine.

Good exercises for people with PKD include swimming, tennis, rowing, golf, biking, jogging or running.

Apart from choosing proper exercise, the best treatment for PKD is Toxin-Removing Treatment. This therapy is a systematic Chinese medicine therapy. The application of Chinese medicines first draw out toxins and wastes out of your body via urine, bowel movement and sweat glands to provide a clean blood environment for recovering renal function. When blood is purified, Chinese medicines can also shrink kidney cysts through increasing the permeability of cyst wall, decreasing lining cells’ activity of secreting cystic fluid and changing inner and outer pressure difference of cyst wall. With these functions, the cystic fluid will be reabsorbed and finally removed out of your body with urine. When kidney cysts are shrunk, renal function will be improved gradually. PKD patients can live a high life quality.
