Q:

Hi, My mother is 60 years old and has been suffering from Diabetes for over 15 years. She also has high blood pressure. Recently, she took her blood tests and found that her creatinine level has shot up to 2.9. What I want to know is:

1. Can this creatinine level be brought down? If not, can this be maintained? At what level is dialysis required?

2. Can she prevent the kidney from further damage?

A:

Hi, firstly, I am sorry to hear that your mother's Diabetes has brought her kidney damages. The followings are the answers to your two questions and hope they are helpful for you.

1. Creatinine can be brought down and the best method is to increase kidney function. Creatinine is one of the wastes that produced by our body and normally discharged by our kidney. However, due to kidney damages, kidney function decreases and creatinine can not be discharged successfully. This is the reason why creatinine levels with kidney problem.

For your mother, there are dead renal cells, damaged renal cells and healthy renal cells in her body. For these dead renal cells, we can not revive them, but for these damaged, we can help them recover by increasing their self-curative ability. As long as these damaged renal cells are repaired, kidney function increases and also creatinine level reduces naturally.

Creatinine level continues to increase if Diabetic kidney problem can not be stopped effectively and generally when creatinine level increases to about 4.6, dialysis will be needed. Due to the serious complications of Diabetes, diabetic kidney problem patients usually start dialysis earlier, compared with patents with other kinds of kidney problem. Your mother's cretinine level as of now is 2.9 and she need not to start dialysis. However, if she does not stop Diabetic Nephropathy effectively, creatinine level increases and dialysis will be finally needed.

2. Your mother's kidney problem is caused by long-term high blood sugar level, so if she wants to prevent further kidney damages, she must control blood sugar strictly. Besides, you mentioned your mother has high blood pressure. High blood pressure occurs easily among diabetics and it damages kidney directly. Therefore, bringing blood pressure is also essential for preventing further kidney problems.

Lastly, Diabetic Nephropathy is one of the complications of Diabetes and besides it, there are many other serious complications like eye problem, foot problem and nerve problem. Therefore, to help your mother live a longer time, preventing these problems in advance is so necessary.
