Q:

My daughter was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome one year ago and has been on and off steroids with each remission getting shorter. Now we are faced with going on Cellcept and I wanted to know what side effects my daughter may experience with this drug. My daughter is 5 years old.

A:

Cellcept is usually used by kidney transplant patients to control rejection. Side effects caused by Cellcept go as follow:

1. Symptoms in digestive tract: Nausea, Vomit, Diarrhea, Constipation, Gastrointestinal bleeding.

2. Damages to blood system: Anemia, Decreased white blood cells

3. High risk of infection: Urinary tract infection, Macrophage virus, Herpesvirus infection

4. Cellcept also trigger malignant tumor like skin basal cell carcinoma

Cellcept is a kind of immunosuppressive agent, and long-term application of it will impair patient's immunity. Therefore, it is harmful for one to take rely on cellcept. Besides, your daughter is young and long-term taking of Cellcept not only brings her terrible side effects, but also affects her physical development and mental development seriously.

Nephrotic Syndrome is a medical condition with several symptoms like proteinuria, swelling, hypoproteinemia and hyperlipemia. Nephrotic Syndrome is marked by massive protein in urine which occurs when glomerular filtration membrane is damaged seriously by inflammatory reaction. In cases of Nephrotic Syndrome, Cellcept can be used to block inflammatory reaction, so this is the reason why your daughter is suggested to take Cellcept. However, as a matter of fact, inflammatory reaction in Nephrotic Syndrome occurs because immune complexes deposit in glomerular basilar membrane. Under such a condition, Cellcept helps to block inflammatory reaction temporarily and as they fail to clear immune complexes away, inflammatory reaction reoccur easily, especially when patients reduce the dose of Cellcept. Therefore, Cellcept is not a long-term solution for your daughter. If you really want to help your daughter to stop Nephrotic Syndrome, you can try Immunotherapy which is an effective combination of western medicine and estern medicine. Although Nephrotic Syndrome can not be cured through Immunotherapy, symptoms can be controlled fundamentally. What is more, Immunotherapy causes no symptoms.
