2012-10-08 16:27

Q:

Hi, Doctor. My cousin who is 41 years old has big problem with his kidney. Both his two kidneys have failed to work and now need dialysis twice a week. Recently, he complains he is experiencing extreme back pain and said he never felt this kind of pain before. The doctor did not find any cause of pain and we are worried that this might become worse for him. So what should we do now?

Appreciate your help!

A:

Hi, back pain is very common among kidney cyst patients and Polycystic Kidney Disease patients, so I want to know what causes your cousin's kidney failure? Is it kidney cyst or PKD? If yes, I recommend him to shrink kidney cyst and as long as kidney cyst becomes smaller, back pain disappears.

However, if the pain is not caused by kidney cyst or PKD, maybe it is kidney infection or kidney stone.

Kidney infection

Kidney infection occurs easily among kidney disease patients, especially among dialysis patients. No matter in hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, kidney infection is very common and if your cousin's pain is caused by kidney infection, he can try some antibiotics or go to doctor for help directly.

Kidney stone

Kidney stone is another leading factor for kidney disease patients to feel pain in their back. Kidneys have function to excrete wastes, but due to poor kidney function, some wastes can not be discharged timely. Wastes build up in the blood and in such a condition, kidney stone is formed more easily. If your cousin feels back pain due to kidney stone, he may need to receive medical treatment or oral medicines to expel the stones.

The above are the suggestions regarding your cousin's cases, and if is there anything unclear, welcome to leave us message again.
