Q:

My father’s IgA positive (++) nephropathy with cresentric glomerulonephritis was detected in year 2005. Kidney transplant in 2009 and currently he is on dialysis 3 times a week, serum creatinine-12.6, potasium-5.5,haemoglobin-9.6. Please what can be done?

A:

We see his condition now is very severe, and he has already done a kidney transplant before. His kidney failure is caused by IgA Nephropathy, which is a kind of immune disorder. Now serum creatinine is so high, and the dialysis will lower creatinine temporarily for him. It is good that his potassium is normal range now; as you may have known, high potassium is a dangerous complication because it will cause heart attack. Reduce the intake of potassium in daily life carefully.

After transplantation, the major concern is that the new kidney will be rejected as foreign by immune system so chronic rejection damage will occur to the new kidney. If the kidneys fail the patients will then turn to dialysis or another course to wait for kidney donor, that is current condition. Seek for the doctors’ advice if the immunosuppressive medicines need to be regulated to reduce rejection and slow further renal damage. As for current treatment, we can draw some clues that traditional Chinese medicine treatment helps regulate immune system and slows fibrosis of the kidneys. In an earlier case, Chinese medicine treatment may stop further kidney damage and supply nutrients for improving the kidneys. So you may have a try for it.
