Q:

My mother got polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and the lab test reveled that GFR was 46. How can she improve her renal function?

A:

To help her maintain and improve renal function, you should firstly know why her renal function declines. If the underlying cause can be controlled, renal function will stop declining. Then, a treatment should be applied to improve renal function.

PKD is featured with numerous cysts in kidneys. When the cysts are small, they cause no influence on renal function at all. So no symptoms are present in early stage of PKD. However, with age, the cysts will increase in both size and number. The large cysts will cause pressure against adjacent nephrons and replace more and more healthy nephrons. Hence, renal function will decline gradually, resulting in chronic kidney disease (CKD). As there is no an effective treatment for PKD, many patients will develop Kidney Failure eventually.

Based on GFR, CKD can be divided into 5 stages. GFR 46 is in stage 3 CKD with only moderated kidney damage. In some cases of stage 3 CKD in PKD, the kidney damage may be reversed.

However, the conventional treatments only can control the symptoms of PKD, but can not improve renal function.

To maintain and improve renal function in stage 3 CKD caused by PKD, the first step is to stop the cysts from enlarging and shrink the large ones. Then treatments should be applied to repair the impaired nephrons and increase the number of healthy nephrons. If the above treatment goals can be attained, renal function will be improved remarkably and fundamentally.

Micro-Chinese Medicines Osmotherapy is an effective treatment for PKD. It has been applied for decades and has showed remarkable therapeutic effects in clinic.
