Q:

Hi, my father is 55 years old he had his kidney transplant 2 years ago, but from last few months he is having a problem with his creatinine levels which increase up to 3.2mg which is very high. He is a diabetes also, i want you to tell me the treatment and proper diet for him so he can control his creatinine level. Thanks for help.

A:

Elevated creatinine indicates kidney problem, so I sorry to say that your father gets kidney problem again. The followings are the corresponding diet and treatment for your father.

Diet for high creatinine level after kidney transplant:

1. Eat less salt.

Too much salt will aggravate swelling and high blood pressure. Therefore, keep far away from bacon, barbecue, various seasoning, pickles, salted eggs and so on. Whatever, as long as it is high in salt, it should be avoided as much as possible.

2. Do not ingest too much protein.

Protein is essential substances for a healthy life, but due to kidney damages, people with high creatineine level need to reduce protein intake and also 60% protein that they ingested should be high quality protein which can be found in egg white, milk and fish.

3. Eat less meat and meanwhile avoid too much physical exercises.

Creatinine is the end product of muscles, including meat taken by us. Therefore, limiting meat intake and physical exercises will be beneficial.

4. Low-potassium and low-phosphorus diet

People with high creatinine usually have elevated potassium level and phosphorus level, so foods with high potassium and phosphorus should be avoided or limited.

Treatment for high creatinine level after kidney transplant:

Kidney transplant is a long-standing treatment for kidney failure, but as it fails to remove causes of kidney damages, kidney disease comes back easily after kidney transplant. High creatinine level shows renal filtration function has been impaired greatly. In such a case, repairing kidney damages and then recovering kidney function is very important.

As long as renal filtration function is increased greatly, creatinine can be expelled in time, as a result of which, creatinine level is controlled.
