2013-01-03 06:37

Q:

Father has had Diabetes for 15 years and he has hypertension as well, one kidney has shrink, creatinine at 2.5 now. What can be done? Please suggest me….

A:

Diabetes and hypertension can both harm the kidneys. Creatinine is a byproduct of creatine produced by muscle activities. Creatinine is filtered freely by the kidneys. When kidneys are impaired by Diabetes and high blood pressure, creatinine level can increase. You mentioned of the reduced kidney, I want to ask what is the kidney size now? The kidneys are made of millions of nephrons. When kidney disease diminishes the amount of functioning kidney cells, kidney size may likely to reduce. The size of the kidney and related tests will help doctors to judge the extent of renal damages. Both your blood sugar and blood pressure should be controlled strictly as of now, and this will help to slow down progression of renal disease.

And at the meantime, the kidneys should be protected and avoid any risk of worsening kidney condition, and make necessary diet modification based on doctors’ suggestions. As for his condition, traditional Chinese medicine treatment may help to stop renal fibrosis, and it is hoped the creatinine can be controlled, kidney condition stabilized and dialysis avoided as for him.
