Q:

My daughter is 9 years old. She was diagnosed with lupus 10 days ago. The checkup result shows that there is protein in urine. I want to know if protein in urine is related to lupus? How to treat protein in urine?

A:

If your daughter has persistent protein in urine, it may indicate that her kidneys have been involved. Lupus induced kidney disease, known as Lupus Nephritis is one of serious complications of lupus. Protein in urine is a common sign of lupus nephritis.

Lupus is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system fails to protect the body against foreign harmful substances, but attacks the blood vessels throughout the body. The abnormal immune response can cause a large amount of immune complexes to form in blood. When immune complexes deposit in kidneys, it will cause inflammation in kidneys. The inflammation can cause fibrosis and scarring of kidney tissues. When the kidney tissues become scarred, the kidneys will fail to function properly. As a result, a large amount of protein will leak into urine through kidneys. That is how protein in urine occurs lupus.

As for the treatment of protein in urine in lupus, the first treatment step is to stop the abnormal immune response in kidneys. If so, the protein in urine will reduce gradually. To prevent the relapse of protein in urine completely, you should have treatment to remove the immune complexes from blood and kidneys. Finally, repairing the impaired kidney tissues and rebuilding normal immune system can help you get rid of relapse of lupus nephritis fundamentally.

Immunotherapy is the recommended treatment for people with lupus and protein in urine. It can help the patients attain the above treatment goals and prevent further renal function decline.
