2013-01-03 05:39

Q:

I have been a diabetic for the past three years. Now I want to take creatine to assist my workouts. If taken properly, will the creatine supplements hurt my kidneys? What might be a safer way? Thanks for help.

A:

Creatine is a kind of amino acid that can strengthen muscles and speed up recovery from fatigues. There are two sources of creatine, one is the metabolism of human muscle and the other is the intake of meat products. Many who do workouts may want to more creatine supplements make them do better. However, creatinine, a kind of wasteful product, will be released to bloodstream in proportional to the activity of muscles. Creatinine is transported to the kidneys to be excreted out of the body.

For people with Diabetes, the concerned issue is that the persistent high blood glucose may damage blood vessels of the kidneys and result in kidney disease. The management of blood glucose, blood pressure and high lipids will help to reduce risks of kidney disease. For Diabetics, generally, regular workouts are recommended because this will help for better controlling of blood glucose, reducing body weight and keeping health status. However, if one eats too much high creatine content foods, more creatinine may be produced to increase the work pressure of the kidneys. Hence, if one is already diagnosed as kidney disease, strenuous exercise should be avoided and you will need to restrict creatine content foods. Now if you don’t have kidney disease, there is not too much to worry, only that take care not to raise your blood lipids.

Hope this can help you. Take care to protect your kidneys. And it is suggested to do regular screening tests to rule out risks of kidney disease or other complications caused by Diabetes.
