Just Diagnosed as PKD, GFR82, is Proteinuria a Symptom of Kidney Failure

2013-01-03 05:31

Q:

I was diagnosed in February this year. I am a little worried now. Recently I have been noticing small clusters of foaminess or cloudiness in my pee. When I was first diagnosed in February, GFR was at 82. Someone told me that proteinuria might be a symptom of kidney failure, is it true? Can you suggest me please…….

A:

As what you have described, the proteinuria may be a sign for worsened kidney condition, but by the symptom it is hard to define the stage of PKD. Kidney failure is the end-stage of kidney disease, and it is defined by GFR<15. It is not likely that renal condition has deteriorated so fast within once a year. As of now, I will introduce why the symptom occur to help you understand your current condition.

Polycystic Kidney Disease is a genetic disorder characterized by numerous cysts in both sides of the kidneys. A person carries PKD genes at birth, but usually poses symptoms from one’s 30s. The cysts in PKD kidneys will enlarge over periods of time. The growing cysts will oppress renal tissues. When this happens, the patients may have high blood pressure. In the kidneys are renal glomerular cells, which stop proteins from escaping into urine. The enlarging cysts can damage glomerular filtration membrane, so an excess amount of protein may be present into urine. So presentation of foaminess or cloudiness in urine indicates that glomerular filtering cells are impaired to certain degrees.

Do you have high blood pressure now? The management of blood pressure is quite important in PKD. Accompanying hypertension can worsen damage on renal blood vessels and deteriorate renal function. As of now, you are suggested to seek for further examination about your renal condition and follow prescribed treatment suggestions to reduce progression of PKD. The key for treating proteinuria in PKD lies in reducing oppression of kidney cysts on kidneys and improving the injured renal cells. In view of this, traditional Chinese medicine treatment holds a greater promise and clinical researches have been ongoing in making the exploration.
