Red Itchy Rash in IgA Nephropathy

2013-06-09 08:50

Q:

I have IgA nephropathy and it has been about 5 years. I have many bubbles while in urination and the doctor told me that I also have microscopic hematuria (which means that there is blood in my urine though I can not see it). Recently I developed a lot of red itchy rash on my legs and arms which is very awful. The skin rash directly related to the IgA nephropathy or there are other causes? Can the rash be controlled and how to control it? The rash appears under the surface of the skin. Thought it often fades after 3-4 days, it will come back and the recurrent rate is quite high? Any informations or suggestions?

A:

As you have mentioned that protein and blood in urine are typical symptoms and signs of IgA nephropathy. Red itchy rash in the skin is not very common, but it does occur to IgA nephropathy patients. In a study that is conducted among 67 IgA nephropathy patients, 3 of them have skin rash. Skin rash, dry or itchy skin and many other skin problems have been found to be associated with kidney problems.

IgA nephropathy is also called Berger’s disease and it is an auto-immune kidney disorder characterized by deposition of IgA immune complexes in the kidneys and cause a series of disorders, inflammations and damages in the kidneys. Besides, many patients will suffer from problems in other parts of their body such as the skin.

Since skin rash is not very common among IgA nephropathy patients and it seems that there are not very much explanation on this issue. But one thing needs to be noted that red itchy skin rash might be related with other health issues besides IgA nephropathy and the most possible cause is henoch-schonlein purpura, therefore it is very crucial to have an early and thorough diagnosis so as to have more effective and targeted treatments to achieve early relief and avoid more harms to the body.
